Belfast woman creates new mural on peace wall

A new piece of art will be joining others along the Peace Wall in West Belfast, as local artist, Deborah Hutchings aims to build bridges in the local area through her work. Armed with a trowel and cement, Deborah, a member of New Life City Church, has been hard at work this past week crafting a 3D wall sculpture of her idea of heaven.

Tourists flocked to Belfast to take part in this year's St Patrick's Day celebrations, including the annual parade in Belfast. The Belfast Telegraph spoke to tourists who travelled to Belfast all the way from the US, Spain, Indonesia and Dubai.

Long-awaited plans to pedestrianise a busy street in Belfast will remain on hold due to staffing constraints, officials say. The street was pedestrianised for a trial period in 2020 during the Covid pandemic, with a view to making the move permanent. it follows an “informal consultation” on the plans, which resulted in “most” respondents being in favour, but a “majority” wanting to maintain “full vehicle access”, the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) said.

Today Derry City and Strabane district commander Chief Detective Superintendent Gillian Kearney made an appeal for anyone who has information on recent attacks against women in Londonderry to come forward. Standing alongside Detective Superintendent Lindsay Fisher, Kearney outlined the 4 attacks which happened in the Derry area over the past week.
Belfast Charity launch annual appeal and 'Christmas Jumper Day'

The Society of St Vincent de Paul has launched their annual Christmas appeal, titled 'The Wonder of Christmas'. The campaign shows how local families may be struggling this year to afford basic necessities. The Society of St Vincent de Paul help families in need by giving them vouchers for anything they need, such as heating, food or presents for their children.
Belfast shoppers queue for last-minute Halloween costumes

Shoppers are queuing outside Elliott's Fancy Dress in Belfast in hopes of securing a last-minute Halloween costume. Owner Clark Elliott says that this year's popular costumes include Beetlejuice, Ghostbusters and classics like witches and cats.
Meet NI's Special Olympics Alpine Skiers

​Lucy Best and Caolán McConville have been chosen to alpine ski at the 2025 Special Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The pair have had success on a world stage in recent years, also winning medals in 2017's Special Winter Olympics in Austria. Jill Coulter-Sloan, who coaches them at Craigavon Golf & Ski Centre, hopes that they will come home in March 2025 with some medals.

Today Agnes Thompson turned 109 years old. The Strathearn Care Home resident is now speculated to be the oldest person in Northern Ireland. She has survived COVID three times and lived through five British monarchs, 24 Prime Ministers and 19 US Presidents.
Michael Dunlop on setting new lap record at Isle of Man TT and funding in motorsport

NI Motorcycle racer Michael Dunlop says he is now setting new goals after setting a new lap record of over 135mph at the Isle of Man TT this year. He says that while funding motorsport is necessary, he believes racers should look within and reflect on their performance to achieve their goals.

NI homeless problem is "huge", says Simon Community

Simon Community Chief Executive Jim Dennison says that the homelessness problem in Northern Ireland is "huge", with as many 80,000 people currently homeless. Justin, 23, became homeless after a family relationship breakdown. He's now residing with the Simon Community in Lisburn.

Virtual Reality rave, 'In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats', has opened as part of Belfast's XR festival. Set in 1989, the experience explores the experience of a rave with cutting-edge technology. It's the UK's biggest immersive VR experience and is currently at Carlisle Memorial Church in Belfast as part of a national homecoming tour.

Carrickfergus Primary School holds Remembrance day event

Today Victoria Primary School in Carrickfergus held an event to celebrate remembrance day. Students made 430 poppies which sat outside the school alongside a poppy wreath. School Headmaster Christopher Fulton says what started as a school-only event has expanded to include parents, carers and the local community.
"It's incredibly frightening": Queen's University young women's walking group on Mary Ward murder

Queen's University Belfast's 'Walkie Talkie Girlies' society was founded in November 2023 to spread awareness on violence against women and girls. The group, which now has over 400 members, hosts group walking session every week. Following the murder of 22 year-old Mary Ward in nearby Melrose Street, Chairperson Aisling Connor says that more women are joining the group.
Threat issued against workers dismantling historic bridge on Sandy Row

A threat warning workers dismantling a Belfast bridge that they will be shot has been placed at the site. The sign was erected at the Boyne Bridge at Sandy Row on Sunday evening and says, “Touch this bridge beware”, with a crosshair symbol.

Today pensioners and union members gathered at Stormont to protest the UK Governments shock removal of the winter fuel payment for pensioners not in receipt of pension credit or “certain other means-tested benefits”. Speaking on behalf of the Communications Workers Union, Lawrence Huston says that the Labour government are aware of the damage which this will cause pensioners, including deaths.
Gavin Robinson MP launches DUP's General Election manifesto

This morning Gavin Robinson launched the DUP's manifesto in east Belfast. Speaking to party members and candidates for this year's election, he said "every vote will count". The manifesto, titled 'Speaking up for Northern Ireland', outlaws their plans if elected.
Disabled Girls Aloud fan experiences ‘disheartening’ accessibility arrangements at opening gig

Oran Murphy is a lifelong Girls Aloud fan who has Spina Bifida. The 18-year-old was excited to go to the first show of their reunion tour in Dublin, however as the concert went on he was unable to see clearly. He thinks that there is an opportunity for accessibility areas to change in order to improve disabled fans’ experiences.
